LearnStyle Ltd.: Design of an Online, Interactive and Comprehensive Individual Education Plan Tool for Use in Primary and Secondary Schools
LearnStyle is a Toronto based assistive technology SME partnering with school boards such as York Region and the Halton District (Public and Catholic) School Boards to develop and deliver special education instructional methods based on unique learning styles of their students. LearnStyle’s primary business model is selling their current online training applications to school boards in Ontario, and have branched out to selling cloud-based teaching systems and applications to help primary students better study. These teaching systems are based on students having different learning styles, and tailoring different studying and learning techniques to these styles.
Currently, school boards are Ministry mandated, and legally bound to create, enact/employ and deploy a “living document” known as the Individual Education Plan (IEP). An IEP enables a child’s learning to be evaluated according to the provincial or state curriculum standards. An IEP identifies the student’s specific learning expectations and outlines how the school will address these expectations through appropriate accommodations, program modifications and/or alternative programs as well as specific instructional and assessment strategies. Current market intelligence indicates tools are rudimentarily formulaic and prescriptive with the information contained within an IEP. Hence the element of an individual plan is difficult as it is developed based on descriptive generalities and norms. Furthermore, the whole process relies on information exchange between stakeholders to be completed in a “pen-and-paper” format.
Being that LearnStyle services the training associated with technology requirements for Special Education (and therefore indirectly IEPs), the need for an interactive and dynamic IEP writer and system is substantial. A cloud based application that engages, tracks and holds accountable all stakeholders in the process through providing users an easy means to input, exchange, expand upon and enhance the IEP information. This will create it a truly “living document” as opposed to being addressed only a few times a year. This innovative IEP application will also analyze and suggest strategies/processes for IEP students based on materials that have already been created by LearnStyle for students, parents and teachers within LearnStylers other applications.
